Vietnamese writer wins SEA Writers Awards

Nhan Dan – Vietnamese writer-Major General Nguyen Chi Trung won the South East Asian (SEA) Writers Awards 2011 for his novel entitled ‘Tieng Khoc Cua Nang Ut’ (The Cry of Ms Ut) at a ceremony in Bangkok on February 16.

The annual awards were established in 1979 by the Thai Royal Family to honour outstanding writers and poets from the South East Asian region.

Nguyen Chi Trung was born on February 15, 1930 in Hoa Phuoc commune, Hoa Vang district, Da Nang city. He joined revolutionary activities in October 1945 and served as Subeditor of the Liberation Army’s Literature Magazine and Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Army Literature Magazine.

He is well-known for his literary works including ‘Da Nang’ notes (1950), the short story ‘Buc Thu Lang Muc’ (A Letter from Muc Village) (1964), another short story ‘Huong Cau’ (Aroma of Areca) (1975) and his novel ‘Doi Thoai Trong Dem’ (The Dialogue at Night) (2011).

‘The Cry of Ms Ut,’ for which he won the award, is his first novel and was published by the People’s Army Publishing House in 2007. The novel describes the arduous but glorious historical period between 1954 and 1959 in the central region during the resistance war against the US for national salvation, in which Trung was directly involved. The novel also garnered the Vietnamese Writers' Association award in 2008.
