Vietnam, US talk tertiary education

The Ministry of Education and Training and the US Embassy in Vietnam organised the fourth annual conference on Vietnam-US tertiary education in Hanoi on April 9.
Themed ‘Promoting Vietnam-US Co-operation Ties in Tertiary Education’, the event saw Under Secretary of Commerce for International Trade at the US Department of Commerce, Francisco Sanchez. Addressing the event, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga underlined that the Vietnam-US co-operation in tertiary education has become an important bridge for the two countries’ comprehensive co-operation and sustainable development. He also highlighted encouraging results of the bilateral co-operation in the field over the past time, citing the signing of bilateral agreements and implementation of student and lecturer exchange programmes between Vietnamese and US universities, and programmes on educational co-operation with the US non-governmental organisations, companies, and foundations. Representatives of US education organisations said they are willing to join Vietnam’s efforts to seek solutions to improve the country’s tertiary education. At present, 13,000 Vietnamese students are taking training courses at various levels in the US’s universities, representing a fourfold rise from 2006. Annually, hundreds of US lecturers have come and taught in Vietnam’s 23 leading universities, which have also enrolled a large number of students from the US to undertake study courses and research as well.
