Cham tower ruins pulled from bowels of construction

A Cham tower structure was found last week while local workers were leveling a road surface for the base of the new industrial complex in the central province of Quang Ngai.

Construction of the Da Hai Industrial Complex has been temporarily shut down after the discovery on the work site in Nghia Hanh district.

The ancient structure is estimated to have several towers adjoining each other. The gates of the tower face southeast, toward the Ve River. Neither the age nor the exact year they collapsed have been established.

Archaeologist of the Quang Ngai Museum Doan Ngoc Khoi says the brick design and the tower's facade are representative of Binh Dinh style.

The province requested local authorities stop construction of the industrial complex to designate an area for protection of the tower, and is waiting to excavate to determine its historical value. (VNA)
