Flood-proof housing project wins int’l award

Hue city-based Development Workshop France (DWF) has received an UN honour for a project on housing in flood-prone central Vietnam.

The Building and Social Housing Foundation (BSHF), under the sponsorship of the UN Habitat, has awarded the International Housing 2008 Prize to DWF for its effective assistance in controlling and mitigating storm damage caused to dwelling houses in central Vietnam since 1985.

For the past eight years, the DWF-funded project has helped build 450 houses and fortify 950 ramshackle homes for the poor.

It has also funded 65 small and medium-sized community projects, including day-care centres and medical stations, at a cost of between VND 40 - 150 million a project.

At the awards ceremony, held in the former imperial city of Hue on November 8, Thua Thien-Hue province conferred a certificate of merit on the DWF and the “Good Person-Good Deeds” badge on country representative Guillaume Chantry. (VNA)
