Vinashin's cargo ship sinks off Ba Ria – Vung Tau

Nhan Dan – A cargo ship named Green Viship owned by Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin) has sunk in the territorial waters of the southern province of Ba Ria – Vung Tau after it collided with another vessel, according to the Vung Tau Maritime and Port Authority.

On August 16, Green Viship collided with the Vinashin's Pacific ship on its way from Vung Tau to Indonesia. Afterward, Green Viship was moved to shallow waters.

On the afternoon of August 20, two commodity holds of Green Viship sank completely below the water surface while its cabin was still above water.

Fortunately, no deaths have been reported.

Relief forces have focused on moving goods out of the ship. As of 3pm on August 20, the Vung Tau-based Sao Mai Company Ltd had pumped nearly all the fuel oil from the ship with about 170 tonnes.
