The life and work of Marx entered the history of human kind as a great and exemplary man concerning his scientific contributions and noble revolutionary sentiment as Engels put it "his name and cause will live forever."

By having a close attachment to practice, inheriting and perfecting the major ideological trends in the 19th century, Marx carried out a thorough-going revolution in philosophy when he represented his scientific discoveries on dialectical materialism and historical materialism, one of the greatest achievements of human thought.

Marxism was not only a weapon to know the world but also a weapon to transform the world in conformity with the law. From human being, the centre of every social activities, Marx came with exact explanations on the mode of production, the role of the masses, the class, the class struggle, on the nation and humanity.

By applying dialectical and historical materialism to the research of capitalism, Marx discovered the law of the mode of capitalist production.

Marxism disclosed the economic law of capitalist society as well as its process of appearance, development and destruction. The theory on surplus value was one of Marx's greatest discoveries, helping human kind thoroughly understand the unchangeable exploiting nature of capitalism.

K. Marx also left a valuable theoretical treasure on the commodity economy and market. It was Marx who pointed out that the commodity and market relations existed in many different economic and social forms and always stayed under the control of the mode of production.

Marx founded scientific socialism, the theory on the cause of liberating the working class and human kind from all forms of oppression, exploitation and depravity. Thanks to its scientific methodology and world outlook, Marxism discovered the developmental law of society and the social forces which could wipe out capitalism and create new society, is the proletariat.

Marx and Engels pointed out the way for the proletarian class to rise up to overthrow the capitalist society. The Communist Party, the political party of the working class, was the force which could lead the working class and working people to carry out revolution to remove the old oppressive and exploitative system and build a new regime, the communist regime.

Marx was a talented theorist and also a great revolutionary. While the movement of the working class was surging, Marx carried out many practical activities. In 1864 in London, he founded the International Workingmen's Association (the First International).

Marx was the major encourager and leader of the First International. He undauntedly fought against all opportunist and anarchist activities in the movement of the working class and worked out revolutionary tactics in its struggle.

Marx and Engels often said that their theories were not a dogma but a guideline for action. Lenin, the successor of Marx and Engels, developed Marxism in the period of imperialism and the epoch of the proletarian revolution into Marxism-Leninism, the pinnacle of human intelligence.

During his challenging years of finding a way for national salvation, President Ho Chi Minh was the first Vietnamese revolutionary who found the light of Marxism-Leninism shining the way to emancipate the nation and the class. Since then, Marxism-Leninism had always been the torch leading the way for the Vietnamese revolution to win one victory after another. The success of the revolution for national liberation and reunification and the building of socialism on a nationwide scale, especially the great achievements of historical significance during the past 20 years of renovation is a vivid evidence concerning the consistent and creative application of Marxism-Leninism to the construction and defence of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

In recent years, the world has experienced many changes and socialism was temporarily a setback. Hostile forces have tried by various ways and means to sling mud at and distort Marxism-Leninism. However, scientific socialism still attracts the hearts and minds of millions of working people around the world struggling against oppression, exploitation and imperialism to safeguard peace, independence, democracy and socialism. Even the road is still lying long ahead with the ups and downs at times, human history will certainly lead to communism as shown by Marxism-Leninism.

Celebrating the 190th birthday of Karl Marx is an opportunity for us to promote research work and persistently and creatively apply it in conformity with the the concrete conditions of the Vietnamese revolution. On this occasion, we are determined to further highlight the sustainable values of Marxism-Leninism, supplement and develop it in line with the practicalities of the country and the epoch, resolutely fight against all reactionary and opportunist ideological trends so as to protect the purity of Marxism-Leninism and realise the socialist ideal through the success of national renovation.
