Vietnam is committed to
counter-terrorism and the non-proliferation of mass
destruction weapons under international treaties to which it
is a party and resolutions of the UN Security Council.
Deputy Permanent Representative of
Vietnam to the UN Ambassador Hoang Chi Trung delivered the
statement at the open debate of the Security Council on the
work of the 1267 Committee, the Counter-Terrorism Committee
and the 1540 Committee, in New York on May 6.
Since becoming a member of the UN
Security Council, Vietnam has made constructive contributions
to the work of these three committees, Trung said. He
particularly noted Vietnam’s assumption of the vice
chairmanship of the Counter-Terrorism Committee.
Trung commended the achievements
of the 1267 Committee’s activities aimed at improving the
effectiveness and full and fair implementation of the 1267
sanctions regime.
The ambassador affirmed Vietnam’s
support for the Counter-Terrorism Committee’s efforts in
considering the Preliminary Implementation Assessments (PIAs),
which serve to intensify dialogue with every member state of
resolution 1373 (2001).
“Vietnam will continue to
participate in the discussion of the Survey of the
Implementation of Security Council Resolution 1373 (2001) by
member states, considering this document as providing a global
picture of counter-terrorism efforts and identifying areas for
further international co-operation to improve existing
efforts,” the diplomat said.
Trung went on to praise the
efforts made by the 1540 Committee during the past six months
in working to co-ordinate the implementation of resolution
1540.
The Vietnamese representative put
forth three initiatives to advance the work of the three
committees, focusing on increasing meaningful dialogues with
member states and enhancing their support for the work of the
committees.
He urged the committees to
continue their efforts to get a detailed and correct picture
of the efforts made by member states, understanding their
difficulties and challenges and engaging them in finding
appropriate measures to improve the implementation.
The ambassador also noted the
improvement of co-ordination amongst the three committees and
their expert groups as another important task in the coming
months. (VNA) |
