Central provinces assisted to clean dioxin-poisoned areas

Central Thua Thien-Hue province will receive almost 658,000 euros in non-refundable aid from the Czech Republic to redevelop areas affected by Agent Orange/dioxin.

The Prime Minister has approved the project to use the money for purging infected areas in Phong My commune, Phong Dien district.

Its neighbouring province, Quang Tri, earlier was financed by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to carry out a US $240,000 project to reclaim waste land infected by the toxic chemicals. The project kicked off in Cam Thanh and Cam Nghia communes, Cam Lo district, in May last year.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) now is calling international organisations to raise a fund of US $10 million to help Vietnam to deal with environmental problems in dioxin-affected regions.

The target regions include old military bases built by the American army during the Vietnam War such as Da Nang airport in the central city of Da Nang, Phu Cat airport in southern Binh Dinh province, and Bien Hoa airport in southern Dong Nai province. (VNA)
