Vietnam calls for Thai-Cambodia negotiation on temple dispute

Vietnam called on Cambodia and Thailand to resolve their dispute relating to the Preah Vihear Temple through peaceful negotiations in the spirit of friendship and solidarity.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ spokesman Le Dung made the appeal on July 21 while answering a correspondent’s question about Vietnam ’s reaction to recent developments between the two members of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

“We want that the two sides to restrain themselves to avoid making the situation complicated and to try to resolve remaining issues through peaceful negotiations in the spirit of friendship and solidarity of ASEAN, for the interest of both countries and for stability and development of the group,” the spokesman said.

UNESCO has recently listed the Preah Vihear Temple as a World Heritage Site belonging to Cambodia.

Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen and his Thai counterpart Samak Sundaravej recently had a phone conversation relating to the disputed Preah Vihear temple, having agreed their defence ministers would meet on July 21 in Thailand to discuss the latest flare-up over competing claims to land around the temple.
