Over 1,000 foreign reporters to cover APEC-2006

Over 1,000 foreign reporters have registered to come to Vietnam for the coverage of the 2006-APEC Economic Leaders' Week, scheduled for November 12-19.

Nguyen Thanh Chau, Deputy Head of the APEC-2006 Secretariat, released the figure at an information session in Hanoi on October 25.

He added that leaders from member economies of the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation (APEC) forum will wear Vietnamese traditional costumes on this occasion.

Five major documents are expected to be approved in the week, including a Statement by APEC economic leaders, a declaration by APEC foreign and economic ministers, a Hanoi action plan for implementing the Busan roadmap, a report on APEC reforms and a report by the Senior Official Meeting to ministers.

Leaders from five nations will take this opportunity to pay official visits to Vietnam. They are General Secretary of the Communist Party of China and President Hu Jintao, Chilean President Veronica Michelle Bachelet Jeria, US President George W. Bush, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The elect-UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, who comes into office in 2007, will also attend the 2006- APEC week.

The APEC-2006 Secretariat has received registration of 565 volunteers to serve in this biggest ever event in Vietnam.

The information session, part of a Canadian-funded programme to improve the APEC reporting quality, was attended by around 70 local reporters from various news agencies and newspapers across the country. (VNA)
