Vietnam set to become WTO member

The final round of multilateral negotiations of the working party on Vietnam's accession to the World Trade Organisation (WTO) successfully concluded on October 26, paving the way for the country to become its 150th member in early November.

Vietnam applied for WTO membership in 1995 and the country since then has gone through 14 rounds of multilateral negotiations.

According to Ambassador Ngo Quang Xuan, Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the United Nations in Geneva, and Dao Huy Giam, Head of the Vietnamese delegation to the WTO, the working party adopted a package of documents related to Vietnam's accession, including Vietnam's commitments on goods and on services, a report on the country's WTO negotiations and the content of a protocol on Vietnam's WTO membership.

These documents will be submitted to the WTO General Council, which is scheduled to meet in the first week of November, for approval. Vietnam is expected to become the 150th member of the Geneva-based body at the meeting.

After the adoption of the documents, Chairman of the ASEAN Committee in Geneva, Brunei's Ambassador Mahadi Haji Wasli, and ambassadors and representatives of the working party's member countries spoke highly of efforts and achievements made by Vietnam's government and people recently.

Vietnamese Trade Minister Truong Dinh Tuyen said the country is determined to fulfil its commitments as a WTO member. (VNA)
