Military telecoms company awarded for business success

The Military Telecommunications Corporation (Viettel) was honoured with the "Labour Hero" title for business successes as well as contributions to the growth of the nation's telecommunications industry. 

A title presentation ceremony took place in Hanoi on April 27 in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung. 

Viettel General Director Hoang Anh Xuan said Viettel Mobile, a subsidiary of Viettel, currently has 3,000th base transreceiver stations, which cover all 64 cities and provinces, reaching out to offshore islands, including Con Dao, Phu Quoc, Co To, Bach Long Vi and Vinh Thuc. 

The number of Viettel Mobile's reached 7.4 million by the end of 2006 and it has since March been busy with a programme to welcome the 10 millionth customer. 

In addition to its operation at home, Viettel Mobile has stretched its arms abroad. 

By late 2006, it got the Cambodian Post and Telecommunications Ministry's licence for providing GSM mobile phone and Internet services in the country, becoming Vietnam 's first telecoms company to invest in telecoms infrastructure and services in a foreign market. (VNA)
