Binh Thuan celebrates its liberation

A meeting was held in the central coastal province of Binh Thuan to mark its 30th anniversary of liberation (April 19, 1975 – April 19, 2005) in the presence of Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem and more than 10,000 local people and representatives from the armed forces, branches and sectors of the locality..

Secretary of the provincial Party Committee Nguyen Anh Minh delivered a speech, recalling the local armed forces and people’s heroic activities during the struggle against the US aggressors as well as the on-going development achievements.

On December 1974, Binh Thuan’s armed forces and people launched attacks against the enemy’s positions, liberating Tanh Linh and Duc Linh districts and controlling most of the rural areas. In early April of 1975, they took control of Thien Giao zone and Ma Lam district and then liberated Tuy Hoa, Hoa Da, Phan Ly and Hai Ninh district on April 17-18, 1975. The town of Phan Thiet belonged to local people as of early April 19, 1975 and on April 27, 1975 the whole province was liberated.

Regarding the province’s on-going development, Secretary Nguyen Minh Anh said that Binh Thuan is determined to obtain VND 2.1 trillion in revenue, which will put it into the list of 15 provinces and cities earning the highest revenue in the country.

One of the country's 20 poorest provinces only two years ago, Binh Thuan rose to rank the 30th among the 64 localities in terms of economic development in 2004, with a record GDP growth rate of 13.02%.

The provincial leader attributed the growth to the implementation of a scheme to restructure the economy in favour of industrial development.

Currently, the province has attracted around 596 investment projects totalling nearly VND 8 trillion. Its export value has increased markedly over the past few years from US $43.6 million in 2001 to US $70 million in 2004.

Binh Thuan also plans to develop its hospitality industry and is aiming to welcome 1.5 million tourists this year.
