Vietnam ranks third after second day of 25th SEA Games

Nhan Dan/VNA – Vietnam ranked third after Singapore and Thailand at the 25th Southeast Asian Games after winning four more gold medals in martial arts on the second competing day (December 10).

The national taekwondo team won two more gold medals fulfilling its 3 to 4 goal medal target. Earlier, on December 9, Vietnam grabbed two gold medals in the men’s team performance event.

On December 10, the Vietnamese karatedo team bagged home two gold medals – one in the single’s kata (performance) event by Nguyen Hoang Ngan and the other in the female team event by Nguyen Hoang Ngan, Nguyen Thanh Hang and Do Thi Thu Ha.

The same day, Vietnamese shooters snatched a silver and two bronzes in the shooting event.

Two bronzes went to table tennis players in the men’s and women’s team events.

In the swimming event, Vo Thai Nguyen won a bronze in mixed 400 metres with his performance of 4 minutes 30 seconds 78 while the gold went to a Philippine swimmer (4 minutes 27 seconds) and the silver was awarded to a Thai swimmer (4 minutes 27 seconds 57).

In the weightlifting, the Asian champion Hoang Anh Tuan who won a silver at Olympic 2008 failed at this SEA Games. In men’s 56 kg class, having lifted 128 kg in the snatch, the weightlifter failed to lift 152 kg in the clean and jerk. This is the second consecutive time the athlete has not succeeded at the SEA Games arena.

Also in the weightlifting, Ngo Thi Nga brought home a silver in women’s 48 kg class.

Until December 10, Vietnamese athletes had won 19 medals including six golds, five silvers and eight bronzes.

Thirty sets of medals were awarded on the second competition day, compared to eight in the first day to athletes of six different sports events, including billiard & snooker, table tennis, karatedo, taekwondo, swimming, weight-lifting, shooting and mountain bike racing.
